The Lake Chiemsee

The Chiemsee, also known as the "Bavarian Sea", is the largest lake in Bavaria and gives the Chiemgau its name. The maximum depth of the lake is about 70 meters.

Islands in the lake are the famous Herreninsel with the Herrenchiemsee Castle, the Fraueninsel with the monastery, which is well worth seeing, the Krautinsel and some tree-lined spots with only a few square meters.

Bathing fun

The Chiemsee is not only a popular sailing and surfing area, but also has a good reputation as a bathing lake due to its excellent water quality. Due to the flat banks, the public bathing areas are of course also ideal for children of all ages.

You will find bathing places in Bernau in the district of Felden and among others at Prien, Rimsting, Breitbrunn, Gstadt, Gollenshausen, Seebruck, Chieming and in Feldwies near Übersee.

Mountains, valleys and alpine pastures

The peaks of the Chiemgau mountains are usually not particularly rugged and are particularly ideal for hiking tours.

The Kampenwand at 1,664 m is one of the few climbing mountains that is almost right on the doorstep.
